Re: (ASCEND) In Defense Of Ascend...
I would have liked to respond to sooo many things in this thread,
but I simply don't have the time. So please excuse me if I sound
terse, but here are a couple of quick items that I think need to
be mentioned, and I don't have the time to fully discuss them.
1) Matt Holdrege, you're wrong in your opinion of the difficulty
of supporting an application level product across multiple UNIX
platforms. There are many, many resources from which Ascend
could draw examples of how to implement portable software. You
might start by studying the emacs or perl distributions.
2) I have to admit that I dont understand how Ascend could argue
that the masses have spoken. The majority of us use UNIX.
Why do you fight so hard to not support us? BTW, my ISP also
uses Linux - exclusively. I'm not opposed to other forms of
UNIX. Right now, Linux is simply the best choice.
3) Ascend has given ample example that they do not know how to
build commercial quality software. If Ascend would embrace
UNIX, maybe Ascend would learn what commercial quality software
is, and improve their products.
4) Why is Ascend so Microsoft centric? Ascend releases products
(like the configurator and the MAX200) that require Microsoft
platforms. Ascend tries to justify this with Microsoft
propaganda. It's like you're trying to convince us that we
should be using Microsoft platforms. Instead, you should be
seeing how Microsoft has led Ascend into trouble. For example,
the configurator debacle, which led to the "UDP port 9"
catastrophe, demonstrates to the world your incompetence in
software engineering and building communications software.
How many times is Ascend going to put their finger into that
electrical socket? I hope Ascend recognizes that when Ascend
sticks it's finger in the socket, that we (the users, our
businesses) get shocked too...
5) And speaking of the "UDP port 9" problem, could some informed
and responsible source at Ascend please tell us what Ascend
did to fix this dilemma. I don't trust Ascend's declaration
(without an explanation) that it is fixed. I hope it is very
obvious why we need this information.
thanks,
Robert
