Thanks for your comments.  I'll look into the swap space, too (along with
Andy Zab.'s comments about "icky gdm")

Hmmm.... say "swappin' spaghetti" over and over again, real fast and your
memory will start to leak ... and your gdm will probably crash too.

Uh oh... I'm making up my own quotes.  That's a reeeaaaaaly bad sign.
