gdm corrupted by forte/glibc install?
Does anyone have any insite into this situation:
On my RedHat 6.0 install at home, I tried to install Forte CE and upgraded
to glibc-2.1.2, but despite this my 64mg weren't enough and after churning
pages for 30 to 60 seconds the whole Xsession collapsed. Then when I tried
to reboot, my gdm only goes to greyscreen and doesn't give the login prompt.
I changed inittab to default to run level 3
and then I could "startx" okay (which goes direct to desktop)
...but if logout and tried "init 5" all I get is the grey screen again.
From what I've read so far, I'm going to assume this means the Xserver
is started but somewhere along the way through the gdm/xdm scripts, it never
gets the client started.
From tclug archives "gdm problems" and "more gdm stuff" I tried setting a
DefaultColorDepth 16 and also tried it at 8 (not that I know why this
was supposed to help...) but that didn't work either.
I'm stumped. Any suggestions about where to look/read next???
And while I'm at it: Is this common for java apps to "collapse" X, or is
this a result of overstessing my RAM and would result from any app to large
to be handled?
