GDM is icky. It has...issues. Sounds like it is starting the Xserver but not
the GDM part. Check you GDM config files, I've had XDM die and come back
with hosed config files.

Try running GDM from a console and see what (if any) errors it spits out.
GDM probally keeps a log files as well. /var/log/*dm maybe.

If all else fails, reinstall the rpm or install XDM or KDM in place of GDM,
as they tend to be a bit more stable.
