Erick,

The fact that Caldera's graphical installer was able to give you a good picture
seems to imply that X should run just fine on your laptop -- at least at 640 *
480 resolution (I think that's what they run at during the install -- I know the
RedHat graphical installer runs at that resolution). Regarding your "maybe not"
below -- did the graphical installer crash, or are you having problems with X
post-install? If post-install, it's probably just a matter of tweaking the
XF86Config file. Did you refer to the Linux on Laptops page I sent you? I think
I saw at least one link to a Compaq 1800 series laptop...
