Well, if you are set on getting a better laptop, I have heard very good things
about the Sony Vaio. My IBM ThinkPad (1500 series) runs Linux quite nicely,
although I had to purchase a PCMCIA network card/modem combo so I could have
internet access -- the internal modem is, of course, a winmodem. I believe the
Vaio's have a real hardware modem, which works under Linux. But the PCMCIA card
for my ThinkPad is a small price to pay in the larger scheme of paying a couple
grand (or more) for a laptop. I have also heard good things about Dell, but
again, you will need a PCMCIA card for network/modem use.
