I haven't done it myself, but I helped a friend do it. Using xf86config
(and probably any other config tool) you can specify your own monitor sync
(horiz. and vert.) ranges -- you'll need to glance through the monitor's
manual. He doesn't run at 1600x1200 because the KDS 19" he has is a little
fuzzy that high, but we've done it at least.

So usually if you can specify your own sync ranges, X can do it.
