(ASCEND) P50 -> P400 Speeds

Hello,

Can anyone speculate as to the validity of this claim: "When my P50
(128k ISDN) was connected to so-and-so's P400, I regularly got 500KB/s
transfers of my web logs."

Someone check my math:  128,000 bits/s = 16,000 Bytes/s

Using compression with a 4:1 ratio (according to Ascends docs) we would
see:

128,000 bits * 4 = 512,000 bits = 64,000 Bytes

That sounds like the end of the story, but it isn't. To test this out,
we created a 22MB file of all zero's and tested the speeds between a P50
and a 3Com Total Control chassis.  We got 1,040,000 bits/s (or 130,000
Bytes/s). This is a 8.125:1 ratio using STAC-9. It was quite
impressive.

We no longer have a P400 to test out what the transfer rate would be
between it and a P50, so, if anyone out there can tell me, is there some
magical property of a P400/P50 combo that would allow for a 31.25:1
compression ratio, thus allowing this customer to get 500KB downloads of
his web logs?

I anxiously await a reply...
