Fully DSP based. You can see more about the architecture of both Ascend and
Cisco 56K modems on their respective web-pages...

Pretty *similar* design on all RAS now...

The MAX4000/4 can support 72, the 4048 and 4002 can support 48. (E1 is
different;)
