In my case its a ps/2 but additionaly, I have a laptop with a
touchpad...which is treated like a ps/2 device. I usually use an
external ps/2 mouse, since I can have 3 buttons that way.  This happened
last time I installed debian on tower system too (also with a ps/2 mouse).

Everything works fine once I stop gpm b4 I startx. I can't remember what
I did last time to make that happen tho. (Have gpm not start on boot,
that is).
