If you hit control-alt-F6, it'll drop you into a virtual terminal. Press Alt-F2 to
get back into X.
If you want to boot by default into the multiuser command prompt environment, edit
/etc/inittab. It should look something like this:
id:4:initdefault:
Change the 4 to a 3 and it should boot as Multiuser instead of into XDM (or KDM or
whichever X login manager it's set up for).
