I would go to a console (CTRL-ALT-F1 or something), log in as root, then
do 'telinit 3' to go into runlevel 3 (no X login, hopefully)

Some people do a different thing (on RedHat with GDM, at least):  Set up
a symlink in the  /etc/rc.d/rc3.d directory that points to
/etc/rc.d/init.d/gdm.  That way, you will boot to GUI, but can get rid
of the GUI login using the command '/etc/rc.d/init.d/gdm stop'  It's not
a whole lot different, but there are certain scenarios where it is a
good thing..

I imagine Mandrake has something similar..
