That's the idea. Loosing the stat hurts lowlevel players, whereas loosing
the exp hurts highlevel players.
Death should hurt. In some games it hurts even more (like all your
equipment being where you died, so you have to recover it somehow ---
or another player can steal it).

Doesn't it work with all servers? The ones that still have the "create
money" spell don't have the client interface, and vice versa :-)

Other than that, it's a matter of patience. There is a huge supply of
zombies, which gives quite a bunch of money to lowlevel players. So
there is no need at all to use server bugs. It is interesting to notice
that most of these newbie "improvements" are just there to make things
easier for somebody who doesn't know the game, and doesn't want to
explore. Commercial RPG playing style, maybe?

Of course, exploring the game works much better in multiuser
environments.
