Your ideas on having a hierarchical system of skills/spells reminds
me of what glimpse i saw of the spell system of DikuMud II;
I believe their manuals/documentation are free to browse, ftp to
ftp.stacken.kth.se, directory pub/mud/dikuii/docs

maybe it is of interest to the Crossfire developers to take a look at
how they did it.
