(ASCEND) Dead Max 4004
Houston, we have a problem.
Our max 4004 "died" this morning at around 6 am.
The unit quit responding and taking calls and all alarm lights are on in the front panel.
I hooked up a console to the unit and rebooted it by flipping the power switch on the back several times.
I did not get a max menu screen.
I pulled all of the modems (72 = 6 * 12 of 33.6) and powered up, this works?I get the max menus.
At this point I think it might be a software issue?.
So?. I saved the config, tloadcode'd down from 6.1.24 (which was up 163 days) to 6.1.7, fsave, nvr
The unit came back up at 6.1.7 so I powered down and put in 1 modem card?.. tried to power up?. Nothing.
So I put in two cards?nothing but the alarm lights? So I switched these with two 2 spare cards we had on a shelf( in case the cards originally in the 4004 were bad) and tried to power up?nothing?.
The unit just will not boot with any modem cards installed. With have 3 pris live on this unit and need it up.
Currently we have filled the first pri with ISDN only calls, but it sure would be nice if we could get it to boot with a modem card in it to help with busies until our replacements get in. ( We've got two 4048's on the way to replace this gd 4004 ?.should be here tomorrow.)
Any ideas on what could be causing this 4004 to not boot with modems?.some sort of power supply issue we could look into getting repaired?

fyi?.Ascend ?excuse me Livingston support system now completely sucks. Sent an email to support@ascend.com to get a ticket number, then called the usual 1800ascend4 number, surfed the menu, put in my ticket number, asked to hold for an engineer?..you can't hold for an engineer anymore?it is now strictly call back basis. Complained that the web site says that the existing support structure will remain intact so that we don't have to learn a new one, the operator says "That's not true. We changed it after the Livingston merger. You can't hold for support anymore. We'll have an engineer call you back whenever they have some spare time." So?I figure screw it? time to use that 1-900 number they brain wash you with in the phone menus, so I try calling the 2.95/minute 1900 number?. It doesn't work from any of our office phones or 3 cell phones (none of which have 900 blocked to my knowledge)?.. Why do I get the feeling that we will start a long term migration path to 100% Cisc!
