(ASCEND) ppp at ascend% terminal prompt?????

A while back I asked about starting PPP once a terminal session is
established.

Well it still screws up and I've simplified as much as possible. 

Max4000 running 5.0Ap48 and a SupraExpress 56K modem running recent
software. 
Win95 client correctly(? It dialls in to a cisco system on the same seg
ok so TCP/IP etc are ok, static IP all round)
Plain PAP password.   I'm IN already, but ppp fails.
Once I reach the terminal prompt and run "ppp" I see the following on a
debug.

What is going on?
