(ASCEND) Max 4K modems bad?

We have one site with 2 Maxen, both with 6 DM-12 K56 modems and
3 CT1s. All of a sudden we get "modem bad last 8 times" or somesuch
in the syslog. This is spread evenly across both Maxen and evenly
across all modems- and it goes away after an hour or so.

It doesn't seem heat related.

This is a pop that has been trouble-free for a year. Can someone tell
me what to look for?
