New Ascend boxes (when manufactured) don't have a serial number yet.
There is a hash code to give a serial number to a box just the same
way as with options. We had one P25 drop its _complete_ configuration,
including the serial number. We got the hash code to reestablish the
S/N as well as all the features purchased for it - seems Ascend has
a nice database for this stuff. So if you lose these, you are not
entirely off. Interesting IMHO ;)
