1500 is commonly the default for many routers and hosts. 576 is
quite common for PPP links. I use 1500 for most of our customers.
Setting 1524 can cause packet fragmentation in some cases. A few of
our dial-ins are set for 296 because those links have a lot of
interactive telnet traffic going over them.
Since routers have to examine the header of every packet they route,
if you use larger packet sizes I suppose you might be able to improve
performance on a loaded box. Many router mfgs quote the capacity of
their routers in "packets per second"
