(ASCEND) P50 and Terminal port

Im having problem configuring a Pipeline 50 through its serial interface.

This is the situation:

I plug the P50 into a com of a PC, start up Hyperterminal, switch on P50.
The main config menu of P50 will display, but as soon as does it locks up
and Im unable to change the config.
???

Okay, if Im unable to config it thru the serial port, is there any chance of
giving an IP address so I can telnet to it, ie connect it via ethternet to
a PC, add an static/permanent arp entry for the P50 and ping it.

Is there any hope ?
