I have found the same problem with our customers.  I found that using the
init string ATN1 (tells most modems to connect at the highest rate
supported by both modems) will allow many customers to connect to the K56
modems that were unable to even connect beforehand, and it will help
stablize connections on those that are able to connect.  This string works
specifically with Supra modems; especially the Supra Fax/Modem 33.6.  I
have had it work on Global Village modems (Platinum), and a few others.
You might have your customers give this a try.  I have also found
disabling flow control to be useful in dealing with the K56 modems.
