Perhaps I just got lucky with my configuration then? I dunno - I'm
running it on fairly new hardware (SSD, i7 CPU, DDR3 RAM, yadda
yadda).

If you were running on old-ish hardware and slow disk, I could see
either Ubuntu or Windows 7 being a problem.
