No, its been around. It just happened to be the best tool for the job in
Linus' opinion. BitMover convinced Linus to use it, they give him a free
license and some 'credit' to have additional features he wants developed
by BitMover for free, and in return BitMover's marketing gets to say
"Hey, if its good enough for Linus and the Linux kernel, its good enough
for you!"

Thus starting a huge flamewar between followers of the "Best tool for
the job, even if its commercial" philosophy, and the "Open Source no
matter what" zealots. (There's also the little matter of according to
BitKeeper's license, you can't ever contribute to another source control
tool once you've used BK...)

If anything its kicked some asses into gear to make a better open source
replacement for CVS.
