I have an adaptec 2940 card. I had to use the kernel from
<slack_cdrom1>/kernels/adaptec.s/ to get the card recognized at boot.
Otherwise you can roll your own kernel. Get your cards model# and poke
around in the kernels directory until you find one that works. There
should be some README files in there that tell what each is for.

perhaps you should abandon cups and try apsfilter. Personally I found
it to be the easiest way to get a printer going under slackware.

as root:
cd /var/spool/lpd
rm -rf <insert_and_printer_directories_here>
cd /usr/share/apsfilter
./SETUP

and follow the menu prompts on the screen. Let it overwrite your
/etc/printcap (save a copy of your existing one if you're paranoid).
Be sure to print the test page and you should be off and running.
