I bought a 166Mhz Alpha (21164) at a computer fair a couple of month ago. 
It's approx. as fast as a Pentium 90, integer-wise. For floating point,
it's a Pentium Pro 150 or so.
gcc for Alpha doesn't optimize well.. the C-Compiler for OSF/1 / Digital
Unix is much better I've heard.
To get things faster, put as much cache on the mainboard as you can.
Also note that you probably need PS/2 FPM RAM with ECC (not as cheap
as normal EDO).
Btw, it has some cool features like built-in serial console and something
similar to Sun's OpenPROM boot menu.
