I have tried using postgres for something like what you have. But I tried it
out on an experimental basis.

I used the ODBC driver from openlink. 
http://www.openlinksw.com/ for postgres. It used to be a free download about 6
months ago. 
I have not been following up with them but since I had to register myself to
get the files I have been getting all kinds of follow up mail asking me to buy
stuff I donot need.

I think there is another ODBC driver for postgres too but I am not sure about
the status of that.

Using this I was able to update tables from linux and read from my NT box and
vice-versa.
