Gabe,

You might have to specify the kernel version to depmod, ie.

depmod -a 2.1.126

as opposed to simply 
depmod -a  or depmod -a preferred

I've had trouble when upgrading to dev
kernels in that it will still try to load the 2.0.x modules, for some
reason linux still believes I am running the 2.0.x kernel.
