Standard Newbie Dialup problem

Okay,

After exploring all avenues, I have decided to go to the experts.

I have been trying to get access to my ISP (who happens to be USWest's
Interact! service) with no success. When I first installed RH5.0 I
could connect through ppp, I could hear negotiate a line speed and that
was it, no connection, nada. Through minicom, it would connect but as
soon as it connected, it would drop it.

Next step was upgrade. I had read some reports of problems with the ppp
package in RH5.0 so I upgraded ppp to 2.2.3-4 and minicom to 1.8 with no
luck.

Somebody mentioned XISP as an excellent package for dialup management so
I installed that. On a given try, it will either state:

xispdial: chat returned 3!
xispdial: modem init failed

or dial into my ISP, negotiate a line speed and then state:

xispdial: ppp returned 0, check syslogs yada yada yada...

I asked Redhat's opinion, and they stated 1.) it is not an install
problem so it is not their problem and 2.) try wvdial

I tried wvdial which cannot even detect my modem (a U.S Robotics 28.8
Sportster internal modems (not a WinModem).

I have run out of ideas to try, anything that clicks with a previous
experience?
