And whenever I can't find a modem init string that works, I fall back on
the one from the Doom2 config files, listed under GENERIC:

AT &F1 &K0 &M0 &Q0 &D2 S46=0

... And if that doesn't work, there's always

AT &F 

.. Which usually also involves a lot of hope.
