First an easy thing: verify your modem's init string. PPP connections
can be very fussy about this depending on your brand of modem. My USR
Sportster had a severe slowdown/drop-off problem which I fixed by
copying the init string from C:\WINDOWS\INF\MDMUSRSP.INF (Windows 95,
though NT may have this too). Look for a line that starts with HKR,
Init, 2,, [modem init string goes here]. You'll need to find the .INF
file that corresponds with your brand of modem. Then just copy the
modem init string to your Linux PPP script (or cut 'n' paste it to
netcfg if you're using that).

What routing daemon are you using (gated, routed, other?)
