The problem with software modems is that the software part is emulating the
missing hardware. Software modems aren't much more than a DSP with a phone
jack. You would probally be better off building your own modem than
modifying a software modem.

Some of the Lucent Winmodems do have Linux drivers, mostly because IBM
forced Lucent to get them working. Even still, get a real modem. You'll
experience much less pain. 

On that note, anyone interested in a USR PCMICA modem (You'll have to flash
it to get v.90, I haven't used it in that long!) or a USR ISA job (can't
remember the model numbers on either of them. They have both proven to be
excellent modems.) I can't use the ISA modem due to a lack of ISA slots.
(Don't need a modem now that I'm on cable any way...)
