What type of network card are you working with? I remember that my network
card didn't work in the debian installer if I had booted into windows before
installing Debian (this was with an ne2k-pci)
If I didn't start windows (powered down and botted windows safe mode command
prompt only, or booted from floppy/cd) everything worked fine.
From the sound of it you aren't loading the correct network driver, or there
is an issue with your network driver.
