Thanks to all who wrote.

I tried the PNP OS = no BIOS setting. That didn't help or hurt. What did
help was grabbing 3Com's driver from their Web site--this is not Donald
Becker's driver. 3Com's page mentions the 3c905C-TX-*M* specifically.
Compiling and inserting the module was not complicated. Everything is
fine now.

The lesson? I guess the offical Linux driver does not support the M
card. Weird. Also, this is kernel 2.2.5; perhaps later kernels support M
cards.
