I use Cyrus IMAP from CMU. It's very nice, supports various login (like
plaintext, cram, kerberos). It works with stunnel for ssl connections. It
supports quotas and allows you to have users that are not real accounts on the
box (i.e. alternative authentication methods allow you to have virtual users
quite easily)
Haven't personally been hacked, but they do keep up with patches and have only
gotten on bugtraq once that I know of...
