I can't speak to WM stuff (I could never get used to it), but sawmill *is* a
GNOME-compliant window manager. Maybe you should report it as a bug to
HelixCode -- it is possible to compile sawmill w/o GNOME support, and if
they were smoking enough crack, they might have done this. Also, the panel
might complain about you not running a GNOME-compliant wm if the wm is
starting up *after* the panel (more specifically, after the gnome-pager
applet).
