Here's a snippet of my conversation:

They really need to ask that to know if they should send you the
macintosh serial cable or the standard serial port cable (PC, Sun,
everyone besides apple).  

You're absolutely right though, they shouldn't force you to hide the
fact that you're running Linux.

On the ISP Megacentral website, it does mention:
"Users of the Linus <sic> operating system will have to get the external
hardware kit".

So if you use that Linus OS...
