Do you use Gnome ala Helix? Does KDE lock up on you?

I hate to double up on a post, but here's the situation.  I really like the
KDE desktop, but it locks up on me occassionally.  Usually to the point that
I have to hard reboot, and then wait impatiently for a fsck to do its thing.
It's painfully reminiscient of the blue screen days, and I hate to go back
there.  It'd be ok if I had an error message or something to go on... but
nada...

I D/L'ed and installed the Helixcode version of Gnome and so far I like it.
The thing I noticed is that it's working over Sawmill - is anyone else
working with this as well?  I understand that it's somewhat lighter and more
flexible than other W/M's.  

Without trying (too hard <smile>) to spark a religious war, what do you
folks prefer (assuming that you are using a gui at all...)?
