Again: no, that's not what happened. They took the last version of SSH v1
that was unburdened by patents and reviewed it and made it nice. And
removed any compatibility with non-BSD systems just for the funny,
apparently.

OpenSSH is not *de novo*, it's a descendent of a formerly Unix
flavor-agnostic software package. One wonders why they call it `open'...
