        I leaned the kernel down by leaving out stuff I didn't think I'll
need in the near future. if I need another feature; i'll just build a new
kernel.

        yeah, that's computers in general. I'm really bad at describing how
to do stuff; because I usually don't remember specific steps, it's mostly
"now do the obvious thing...".

        that's a good thought.
        in my case, tho, there aren't a lot of hardware peripherals. my
sound board is a yamaha 192; which I don't think is supported yet. (my
trusty 1992 SB 16 Pro died not too long ago; this board was one I just had
lying around. doesn't even do me much good under winblows; since the SB
death also took out my CD-ROM drive [connected to the SB with a proprietary
connection], so I can't load the drivers from the CD.) nothing else other
than a keyboard, trackball, monitor, and an [external] modem.
