compile problems: net-pf-1 module?

I just tried (again) to compile 2.2.14 on my machine at home.
everything seemed to compile fine; but when I try to boot the new kernel, it
gives me a "modprobe: can't find module net-pf-1", repeatedly (streams down
the screen).
I've tried compiling several times; with slightly different options
each time; but I'm poking in the dark here.

can anyone tell me what's wrong?
if not; how do I go about debugging this/what information do people need to
debug this? I probably should include my .configure file; but I left it at
home.. :(

other questions:

do you *have* to do "make modules" and "make modules_install" after you've
built the bzImage? or is order not important here?

what is the 'vmlinux' file for? why does RH put a copy of it in the /boot
directory?

how do you make an initrd image; and what does it do?
