I agree totally that these "super weapons" throw the game out of balance.  As with the previous poster, I'd  
like to keep the "artifact" weapons as some of the best weapons around.

I would propose that we do things a little like Moria:

   1) No increasing damage or lowering weight.  (Enchants still lower weight a little)

   2) Enchanting gets harder the higher the plus... Above +5 gets quite difficult.  Maybe +10 a maximum.

   3) Similarly, +'s on stats gets much harder the higher the +.

   4) Perhaps an exponential scale on the "prepare" instead of a polynomial scale.

As with Moria, a +5 large morningstar is more formidable than a +5 dagger, since the morningstar does much  
more damage.  Also, since it weighs much more, only a fighter class could use it effectively.  And the  
exponential scale would make it very hard if not immpossible to create a total "super weapon" that could max  
out all of your stats.  Walking through the "10 army" area should NOT be possible in only 1 minute.

Just some thoughts.   I'm off to download 0.91.5 now. :)
