(ASCEND) Pipeline P75 - is it dead or only wounded?

I have a P75 that seems to have forgotten what it is.

At power up, the POWER led lights solid and the other leds are off.  After
about 10 seconds, the CON led is solid and the WAN led blinks.  Then after
a few seconds, the console is displayed out the serial port and the WAN led
comes on solid and the CON light blinks.  After a few minutes it repeats
the cycle from the beginning, including redrawing the console screen.

The Edit Menu says "Running Self Test" and has two question marks "??" in
the upper right-hand corner of it.  All the status boxes have two question
marks in their right-hand corners, also.  The console does not respond to
keystrokes.

I don't have the history of this P75 so I don't know how it got into this
state.  Having nothing to lose, I NINDYed the unit.  The procedure appeared
to work but the symptoms persist.  I tried various releases of S/W for this
model.

Interestingly, if I jumper P2 (don't try this at home, kids!) the console
appears (still with the "??"s) and now it responds to Ctl-L and TAB keys. 
It doesn't respond to Ctl-D.  It is like it is waiting to be told what it
is and its serial number!

Is it possible to revive this unit myself, or does it have to be RMAed?  I
understand that a working P75 knows and displays its serial number.  Is it
possible that this unit just needs to be told some information in order for
it to start working?  If this is so, $180 would seem like a lot to have
Ascend load in the info.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance.
