Re: (ASCEND) Max200plus

Hi Ed,

We had a similar problem and had to go and buy a serial PCMCIA card so that
we could connect a local laptop and login to the MAX.

I don't have the details handy, but if you search deja.com I remember a
couple postings on what to jumper and how to reset all the settings and load
a fresh copy of the SW. I seem to recall something about needing to put the
local serial PCMCIA card in slot 8 to do the SW download. Also, the MAX200
was very picky about RS-232 control signals being applied to the serial
interface. Make sure that pins 5,8 and 20 on the 25-pin RS-232 interface are
tied together or you will not get a login prompt.

All in all, however, I don't know if it is worth the effort. We have a lot
of Ascend gear all the way from Pipe 50s up through MAX4000s through B-STDX
8000/9000 Frame Relay switches. For the most part, we have found Ascend
equipment and SW to be capable, robust and reliable. All in all, an
excellent value. The one glaring exception and disappointment to the above
statement is the MAX200/MAX200+. In our experience, if the run, they
eventually lock-up after a few days and need to be powered off to recycle
them. We had four of them. If memory serves me correctly, two went belly up
with hardware problems, and the other two became so unreliable and required
so much attention that they were pulled from service and replaced with
MAX4000s with BRI cards which work very well. We spent a lot of time
upgrading/reloading software and the like but the problems remained.

I hope you will have better luck than I did.

Regards

Frank

Hello,

Can anyone tell me how to delete all settings from a max200plus. Or
at least get access to the settings.
The max200 doesn't accept anything from the network. As you may
know it doesn't have a console port so it's a bit unaccessible. :(
I'm looking for something like the jumper next to the big chip on a
pipeline.

With regards,
