You can turn on finger in the max and write a little shell cgi wrapper to finger all your maxes and dump it to the browser.
Paranoid about finger?  Write a filter for your ethernet port to allow finger only from your cgi machine.
Works great....very quick....little cpu hit on the maxen becuase its just a charachter dump and your not walking mibs like snmp.

Hi,
	Ok guys i figured it out, i grabbed maxwho2 from some site and ran
that in cron, it fingers the box, i blocked finger access on our cisco
4000 router to only internal hosts, and it works fine, thanks
