(ASCEND) merit-proxy and chap

I have to setup a proxyradius and got the latest free version from
merit. I have set it up to communicate with my free radiusserver from
ascend. Proxyauthentication works, as long as the authentication type is
pap. So I can even set up a callback connection to a Linux box.
Unfortunately the window clients try to connect using chap
authentication. Whenever they try to connect, they get an reject from
radius.

When I use the same user profile without proxying there is no problem.
Authentication works with chap.

Could anyone tell me where to have a look for to solve that problem?
