re: Re:re: (ASCEND) Router for ADSL

I have been evaluating GTE as a corporate ISP for a few months now. In
conversations with their representatives, they have stated that they do not
have a single ADSL standard. The DSL device will be totally dependant on
the DSLAM in the LEC and the GTE DSL option is frame relay based. UUNET,
on the other hand, is promoting SDSL almost exclusively, especially for
small business applications, and has stated that they can standardize on a
single DSL device... flowpoint. UUNET promotes an Internet based DSL while
MCI Worldcom offers a frame relay based DSL offering. Of course, recent
strategic alignements by UUNET positions them for more ADSL offerings and
this could cause their focus to change some.

One word for the wise, 1.5mb ADSL (receive speed) and 768 (transmit speed)
may not be all that it sounds. I have never heard anything bad about DSL,
aside from a lack of standards, but some vendors promote ADSL with these
kind of speeds when, in reality, the CIR is only 128kb, or 256kb or (the
highest I have seen) 384kb. Make sure you know what your are buying,
especially for frame relay based DSL offerings. Also, beware of eventual
oversuscribing of ADSL.

At least in the Pacific Northwest, GTE is using Fujitsu DSLAMs and modems.
We're currently getting our DSL through GTE, and their setup whitepaper
was provided by Fujitsu tech support (it also assumes you're using Ciscos
to handle your DSL traffic).

I was under the impression, from talking to one of Fujitsu's GTE reps
while visiting a POP at a GTE CO a couple months ago, that GTE is using
exclusively Fujitsu DSL equipment right now.
