Well, this may not be all that helpful as I have no direct experience with
SCO's ppp, but what needs to be done is a PAP username & password needs to
be set in ppp; with FreeBSD 3.0-RELEASE'es ppp, it's the set authname
<username> and set authkey <password> commands.  After the connection is
established, don't attempt to log in; rather, just start ppp on the line.
Again, with FreeBSD, the command is ~p to enter packet mode; there should
be analogous commands for SCO's ppp.

What should happen is that the Ascend should detect ppp frames coming in
and thus start negotiating a ppp connection.  Note that PAP authentication
is part of ppp negotiations.

Hopefully someone with direct SCO experience can give you some more
specific directions...
