(ASCEND) Ascend 4048 with UNIX dial-up: How to?

I was asked to assist a client in converting his Windows based E-Mail to
using his UNIX system to send and receive mail from his ISP. Presently
he uses a Windows 95 system to connect to the ISP and retrieve his
e-mail.

I suggested that we can use his UNIX box and deliver mail to the desktop
of his dumb terminal users.

Problem: When I used cu to dial into the ISP I get the following:

CONNECT 14400 LAPM COMPRESSED

** Ascend Pipeline Terminal Server **

NO CARRIER

I called the ISP's technical support line and they informed me that they
are NT based. The machine I am hitting is an Ascend 4048 and the mail
host is "Radius NT" (Whatever that is).

The technician recommended that I "enable PAP" on my end but was totally
confused with the idea of logging in and then starting ppp (as in is
common on SCO: Login: nppp <CR> Password: whatever). The technician
indicated that they has several UNIX clients with full-time ISDN
connections and I asked him for phone numbers for the clients so that
I could obtain information on their configurations. Since this was late
on Thursday afternoon, he was unable to supply the information.

I suspect that the UNIX client's have a complimentary Ascend router at
their end and the UNIX box knows nothing of the connection protocol,
just talks TCP/IP to the router.

With the limited information presented above, does anyone have
experience establishing an SCO UNIX ppp connection to an Ascend 4048?
Can it be done?

My client is only needing mail/storage/forwarding to the internet, and
a full time ISDN line with an Ascend router is more expense than the
client is wanting to make.

TIA
