Are you sure that they *really* connected in V90?
If you didn't round the connect speed too much, 50K is a K56 speed.

K56 speeds are  (32 + n*2)K like:
  32000, 34000 ... 48000, 50000, 52000, 54000, 56000.

V90 speeds are  (28 + n*1.333..)K like:
  28000, 29333 ... 48000, 49.333, 50667, 52000, 53333, 54667, 56000

It's also not unlikely that two modems capable of both K56 and V90
preferes K56 if not forced to V90 (by S-register settings).
