What is the customer using?

There's been some long-standing issues with Matterhorn-1 & Matterhorn-2
series USR Sportsters (that's any Sportster circa anytime 1996 to 1-Q97).
These account for 1st & 2nd generation "33.6k" Sportsters that were the
first to use a 92.0 Mhz clock & a new DSP incorporating both CPU & data
pump operations. The workaround on the Matterhorn-1 was to toss the damn
thing. The workaround on the M-II was for the Sportster owner to disable
the 3429 symbol rate and disable all V.42/V.42bis and use MNP-4 EC with
no compression. There were 2 or 3 'S' registers that accomplished this
although I apologize I don't recall what they were. - They're documented
in the S-Register help screen (ATS$). There's no easy way to ID whether
the customer has M-I or M-II except as I recall the M-I had a firmware
date (EPROM DATE) between 10/95 and 04/96 (ati7 screen).

Matterhorn Sportsters can be identified from their ati7 features screen
and have a 92.0 Mhz clock and all are -->> "33.6k" <<-- models. - these
are the ones which are *not* upgradeable to 56k at all or else require a
modem exchange (if purchased within the qualifying window). All 28.8k
Sportsters are also not 56k upgradeable but those used a 20.16 Mhz clock
with a separate 80186 CPu and *DO NOT* (should not) exhibit connect
problems.

Recent production Sportsters available for most of the past 12 months
(2-Q-97 and later) should not exhibit connectivity problems. Also, the
Matterhorn series which are most problematic connecting to Ascend hosts
generally -do not- have problems connecting with USR hosts.
